What is MRI of the Breast?
An MRI of the breast may be done for various reasons. This test allows the radiologist to better assess any findings. From determining whether cancer is present to measuring the size of nodules or pinpointing the exact position of a nodule. MRI procedures can vary widely in time frames from 15 minutes to 45 minutes depending on the body region being scanned. In this scenario, the MRI of the breast is usually around 45 minutes long. This is based on how the MRI scanner picks up the signal from the body to create the images. In MRI, the machine uses the water from the body as a signal to create the images. However, timeframes may also be altered by the need for contrast (gadolinium) during the procedure. As well as, for some more invasive procedures. The MRI technologist will usually explain the process and details of the procedure with the patient prior to the study.

How does a Breast MRI work?
The patient will be laying down on their belly, on a camera which will allow the breast to fall downwards away from the body for better imaging. IF the exam is ordered with contrast an IV catheter will be placed on the patient’s arm prior to the study. Such will be connected to an injector that will allow the MRI Technologist to inject the contrast while scanning the breast at the same time. Preparing for an MRI scan requires wearing comfortable clothing and the removal of all metal accessories. Patients that have metal or electronic implants from prior surgery should consult with their physician prior to scheduling an MRI for safety concerns. In the scenario where the implant is MRI safe, the patient should provide the MRI technologist with the implant card for more implant specific MRI safety recommendations from the provider. For certain MRI procedures fasting for at least 4 hours may be required. If the procedure requires fasting, you will be notified during the scheduling process. If you are in need of an MRI in Orlando contact your physician to receive a referral. Once you have received the referral, contact a diagnostic imaging center that provides MRI near you to schedule your exam.
What are the reasons for a Breast MRI?
Breast MRI’s may be ordered for various reasons. Many of these include pain, tenderness, bleeding, nodules, cancer and more. MRI allows the radiologist to assess with detail any pathological findings. It allows the physician to properly evaluate the breast tissue and any arteries and glands in the surrounding areas. If the reason for the exam is cancer then IV contrast will be required for the test. Cancer in MRI will be very difficult to detect without the presence of contrast. Contrast (Gadolinium) is beneficial in many MRI exams. In MRI contrast can help the radiologist find and diagnose infections and cancer. The solution highlights in detail the pathological findings and helps the radiologist create more accurate measurements and diagnosis.
